Keep seeking and setting your minds on things above, putting to death what's sinful in you, putting on spiritual character, letting Christ's peace rule, letting His word live in you richly, and being thankful in all circumstances.  All of that comes before and sets the foundation for what Paul teaches next in his letter - how to have the best family ever! Pastor David shares Paul's instructions on how wives, husbands, kids, and dads all work together to create this!

After writing about how believers are to "put to death" sinful things and to "put on" spiritual things, the apostle Paul turns his focus onto two things believers need to let happen and one all-encompassing "whatever" instruction when it come to what they say and do. Pastor David explores these, drawing out their importance and application in our lives.

I would like to retract a statement I made while preaching this message. I stated that Jesus suffered because of sinful desires that came from his flesh, and he had to put those to death just as we do. This was an error on my part. While Jesus was born 'in the likeness of sinful flesh' (Romans 8:3), had the same limitations and weaknesses in the body as we do resulting from sin entering the world through Adam, and was able to be tempted, he did not have a sin nature as we do. But what does agape love look like in our lives, what does it do? All too often believers are guilty of telling themselves lies. But that's not all - we believe those lies, and live our lives as if they were true. Jon Hay explains that whenever we do that, fellowship with God takes a hit and, if we constantly do that, fellowship with God becomes grey, dreary, flat and empty. Having worked through a step-by-step process for putting on the new self (aka, walking in step with the Spirit), Pastor David unpacks what the apostle Paul says next in his letter to the church at Colossae: there are two foundational ways of relating that every Spirit-filled church consistently and constantly lives out.

In Colossians 3 we're told to put on things like a compassionate heart, kindness, patience, etc. In Galatians 5 we told if we live by the Spirit, then we're to walk in step with the Spirit. Ok, I know I should, but how exactly? That's a question that often plagues believers. Pastor David explores how those two commandments are fundamentally similar, and shares a step-by-step process that will enable you to experience the incredible blessing God has in store as you put on those things, and walk in step with His Spirit.
